Solution - Pergola Control

Description

Compatible motorized pergolas can be integrated into the PIERRE system.

Depending on the pergola design, the system can control the opening and closing of the slats or the movement of a motorized roof structure.

For direct bidirectional motor control, two separate outputs of the PIERRE Controller are used to control the two directions of movement, similarly to motorized shading systems.

The pergola can be controlled manually using local wall push buttons, through the Smart PIERRE application, as well as through Scenes and Automations.

Operating Principle

For bidirectional motor control:

  • two separate control outputs are used for the two directions of movement,

  • the two directions must never be active at the same time,

  • based on the configured travel time, the PIERRE system can determine the approximate intermediate position of the pergola,

  • local wall push buttons and the PIERRE system can control the same pergola movement.

The exact control method always depends on the type and wiring of the pergola motor and its own control electronics.

Automations

Pergola control can be combined with different sensors, schedules, and system conditions.

Rain

Using a compatible rain sensor, the pergola can automatically move to a configured position when rain is detected.

The appropriate position — for example, open or closed — must always be determined according to the pergola manufacturer's requirements and the design of the structure.

Wind

Using a compatible wind sensor or wind-speed data, an automation can move the pergola to a predefined position.

The required safe position and permitted wind load must always be determined according to the pergola manufacturer's documentation.

Sun

Based on a light sensor, schedule, or other condition, the position of the pergola slats or roof structure can be automatically adjusted for shading control.

Schedule

Scheduled operation can also be configured, for example:

  • opening in the morning,

  • closing in the evening,

  • moving to predefined positions at specific times of day.

Technical Notes

  • Before wiring and configuration, verify the pergola motor's supply voltage, control method, power requirements, and the operation of its own control electronics.

  • For direct bidirectional relay control through the PIERRE system, the motor must provide separate connections for the two directions of movement. A typical 230 V AC motor configuration uses L1 (Direction 1), L2 (Direction 2), N, and PE.

  • If the pergola has its own control unit and provides only external control inputs, the PIERRE system must be connected to the external control interface specified by the manufacturer. In this case, the PIERRE system sends control commands to the pergola's own control unit instead of directly switching the motor.

  • Many pergola systems include their own end-limit control, motor protection, overload protection, and other control or safety functions. These functions must not be replaced or bypassed by the PIERRE system, and they are not configured through the PIERRE system. They must be configured and commissioned by a qualified professional responsible for installing the pergola or its motor, according to the manufacturer's requirements.

  • For bidirectional motor control, the two directions of movement must never be active at the same time.

  • The motor voltage and current consumption must be verified before connection. If the load exceeds the permitted switching capacity of the PIERRE Controller or the connected output module, an appropriately rated relay or contactor must be used.

  • For position-based control, the actual full travel time of the pergola must be measured on site and configured correctly. An inaccurate travel time can result in inaccurate calculated intermediate positions.

  • For outdoor installations, cables, connections, cable glands, and installation materials suitable for outdoor use must be used.

  • For rain- or wind-based automation, the required response and safe position must be determined according to the pergola manufacturer's requirements.

  • If the pergola manufacturer requires dedicated or certified wind, rain, overload, end-limit, or other safety protection, it must not be replaced by a PIERRE Automation.

  • Installation must always be carried out according to the pergola and motor manufacturer's documentation, the PIERRE technical documentation, and applicable electrical and safety requirements.
