PIERRE Wave – Installation and Network Planning

Description

PIERRE Wave is the wireless part of the PIERRE Smart Home Solution and uses Zigbee mesh communication between compatible devices.

For a stable and reliable PIERRE Wave installation, the network must be built in the correct order and the Gateway and Router Devices must be positioned appropriately throughout the property.

The recommended installation and pairing sequence is:

Gateway / Display → Router Devices → End Devices

Following this sequence helps establish a stable Zigbee mesh before End Devices are added to the network.

Three Device Roles

PIERRE Wave devices can have three different roles within the Zigbee network:

Coordinator – Gateway / Display

The Coordinator creates and manages the Zigbee network and assigns devices to the network.

Depending on the PIERRE system configuration, this function can be provided by a compatible PIERRE Gateway or Display.

There is one Coordinator per Zigbee network.

Router Devices

Router Devices are permanently powered devices that repeat Zigbee communication and help extend and stabilize the mesh network.

Typical Router Devices include:

  • PIERRE Smart Plugs

  • wall switches or relay modules with permanent L + N power supply

  • compatible permanently powered devices and sensors with Zigbee routing functionality

Router Devices form the backbone of the Zigbee mesh and must remain permanently powered.

End Devices

End Devices communicate through the Zigbee network but do not repeat the signal for other devices.

Typical End Devices include:

  • battery-powered sensors

  • wall switches or modules without Neutral

  • remote controls

End Devices rely on the existing Gateway and Router infrastructure for communication.

Why the Installation Order Matters

For a stable PIERRE Wave installation, always install and pair devices in the following order:

1. Gateway / Display → 2. Router Devices → 3. End Devices

The Router infrastructure should already be available when End Devices are paired.

If an End Device is paired before suitable Router Devices are installed around it, it may establish a connection through a distant or less suitable network path. This can result in unreliable communication or devices becoming unavailable later.

For this reason, always build the Router infrastructure first and pair End Devices afterwards.

What This Guide Covers

This guide explains:

  • the recommended PIERRE Wave installation and pairing sequence,

  • where to position the Gateway and Router Devices,

  • how to build a stable Zigbee mesh,

  • the checks that should be performed before completing commissioning,

  • and troubleshooting for Wave devices that become unavailable or respond slowly.

System Overview

PIERRE Wave devices fall into three functional categories:

  1. Display/Gateway - Coordinator – The central Zigbee controller (forms the mesh, assigns addresses)
  2. Router Devices – Always-powered components that expand and stabilize the Zigbee mesh network, improve range and reliability:
    • Smart Plugs
    • Wall switches or relay modules with Neutral (L+N)
    • Some powered sensors (like wired thermostats)
  3. End Devices – Devices that do not repeat signal and communicate only with their parent (usually a nearby router):
    • Battery powered devices - Motion sensors, door/window sensors
    • Wall switches or modules without Neutral
    • Remote controlers
Installation & Setup Order
Step 1: Install the Display/Gateway
  • Position the PIERRE Wave display/gateway in a central, open area.
  • Avoid installing it in closed metal cabinets or near sources of wireless interference (Wi-Fi routers, microwaves, large TVs).
Step 2: Add Router Devices
  • Install Smart Plugs and all L+N modules/switches first.
  • These devices form the backbone of the Zigbee mesh.
  • Place them strategically throughout the property to ensure that future devices always have a strong signal path.
Step 3: Add End Devices
  • Now install battery-powered sensors or switches/modules without Neutral.
  • Make sure each end device is within 5–10 meters of a router device.
  • Do not place end devices in isolated or shielded locations (e.g., metal boxes, behind thick walls) unless a strong nearby router is available.
Advanced Tips & Best Practices
Let the Mesh Stabilize
  • After adding each Router or End Device, wait 5–10 minutes before proceeding. This allows the network to update its internal routing paths.
  • After large installations or a power loss, the mesh may take up to 24 hours to fully stabilize and optimize.
  • PIERRE Wave uses the 2.4 GHz band, which can be affected by Wi-Fi interference.
Avoid Interference with Wi-Fi
  • If you experience inconsistent performance, consider adjusting the Wi-Fi channels to minimize overlap with Zigbee.
  • As a PIERRE installation recommendation, Wi-Fi channel 1 or 6 can be used when Zigbee operates on channel 20, 25, or 26 to help reduce interference.
Keep Router Devices Always Powered
  • Never connect Smart Plugs or L + N Router Devices to power timers or wall switches that regularly disconnect their power supply.
  • Router Devices must remain constantly powered to maintain the stability of the Zigbee mesh.
Avoid Overloading the Gateway
  • The Gateway can handle a limited number of direct connections. Whenever possible, build the network so that End Devices can communicate through appropriately positioned Router Devices rather than relying only on direct communication with the Gateway.
  • Ensure that Router Devices are well distributed and not clustered in only one part of the installation.
Use Smart Plugs Strategically
  • When using a Smart Plug to extend Zigbee coverage, place it where it still has a strong and stable connection to the existing mesh while extending coverage toward the weak area.
  • Build the Zigbee network progressively outward from the Gateway: Gateway → Router → Router → End Device.
  • Avoid placing a Smart Plug directly in an area where the Zigbee signal is already too weak for reliable communication.
Zigbee Mesh is Self-Healing — Be Patient
  • If a Router Device is moved or a new Router is added, the Zigbee mesh can re-learn and optimize its communication paths automatically, but this may not happen immediately.
  • Allow several minutes for the network to stabilize. In larger installations, full mesh optimization may take up to 24 hours.
PIERRE Wave – Troubleshooting Guide

Symptom: Device not responding
Possible Cause: Out of range or no router nearby
Suggested Action: Add a router (Smart Plug or L+N device) between gateway and the device

Symptom: Delayed status or automation trigger
Possible Cause: Poor mesh routing or interference
Suggested Action: Reposition router devices or adjust Wi-Fi/Zigbee channel

Symptom: Battery device keeps going offline
Possible Cause: No nearby router / signal too weak
Suggested Action: Add a router (Smart Plug or L+N device) within 5–10 meters or replace battery

Symptom: Devices drop after power outage
Possible Cause: Mesh disrupted or needs healing
Suggested Action: Wait for the network to re-stabilize, or power-cycle router devices to speed up recovery

Symptom: New device connects but works poorly
Possible Cause: Mesh not yet optimized
Suggested Action: Wait a few minutes or add another router (Smart Plug or L+N device) nearby

Symptom: Unstable system after adding devices
Possible Cause: Too many direct-to-gateway connections
Suggested Action: Ensure end devices connect through router devices, not directly to the gateway
